Altani Ippolit Karlovych (15 (27) May 1846, Yekaterinoslav, Yekaterinoslav Province, Russian Empire - 17 February 1919, Moscow, RSFSR) was a Ukrainian and Russian violinist, conductor, and teacher. Member of the French Academy of Fine Arts (1895).
Ippolit Karlovych Altani was born on 15 May (27 May, New Style) 1846 in Katerynoslav (now Dnipro). Ippolit's first violin teacher was his father, a Czech-born musician who served as a military bandmaster in Ukrainian cities.
From childhood, he toured Ukraine as a violin prodigy.
In 1866, he graduated from the St. Petersburg Conservatory (violin class of Henryk Wieniawski, compositions of Mykola Zaremba and Anton Rubinstein).
From 1867 he worked as a choirmaster and conductor, and from 1874 to 1882 he was the chief conductor of the Kyiv Opera.
Director of the Kyiv Music School (1974-1875).
In 1882-1906 he was the chief conductor of the Bolshoi Theatre (Moscow).
He died on 17 February 1919 in Moscow.
